IT'S NOTHING NEW: A 48-Hour Design Sprint
This is a yearly project that involves the entirety of my BFA major as well as the connect MFA program as well. There are around 20 groups of all year levels that are tasked to make something based on a given prompt. This prompt was Opposing Forces: The intersection, conflict and synthesis of design, humanity and AI. There are 48 hours to create then display what ever your team creates.
This prompt was difficult at first to brainstorm for, it is very opened ended and there are many opinions on AI which meant we had to consolidate and agree on a common stance. We decided to go with a motion piece as an 'Artist's Statement' of sorts. Each collage represents a tradition way something was created and what it was taken over by when technology improved. Each collage would have two parts, the 'old' and the 'new'. The overlapping represents the technology taking over that traditional form. These collages are laid out in a pseudo-timeline of sorts from older to newer. This represents the commentary that history repeats itself. Creatives will fear their jobs are going to get taken over but at the end of the day creatives will push forward, adapt and learn. Therefore IT'S NOTHING NEW.
This project was a lot larger than most I have done so far. That alone presented a unique challenge because I had to make sure I was not falling behind the entire time and also had to make sure I had enough progress to know what I needed to do so I didn’t feel lost. I feel like I was able to keep up fairly well and even though I feel comfortable enough to time manage feel like this project really helped with that skill. This project was really fun for me since I grew up having a tamagotchi, so this was really nostalgic for me. I ended up using a lot of inspiration from older Nintendo consoles and games. I feel like using spline was the safe option rendering wise. I wanted to use it to get better acquainted with it but looking back on it I wonder what GORM would look like of I ended up using cinema instead. I feel like his design and his background could do with some more idle movements, especially the background. i feel like these secondary movements can really enhance what is there and make the game feel a bit more cohesive.
